The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris district is likely to become a carbon pollution-free district, additional chief secretary Supriya Sahu has said.

The conference on the theme 'Carbon-free District' was held at Ooty in The Nilgiris district. Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, she said, “the Nilgiris is famous for its dense forest cover and biodiversity conservation zone. The Nilgiris has the potential to become a carbon-free district in India.

The conference was attended by environmental experts, international dignitaries and officials. They have given some suggestions.

The Nilgiris district is witnessing heavy rush of tourists, causing traffic jams and releasing carbon gas in large quantities. To control this, recommendations have been made, including introduction of electric vehicles, increasing forest cover and avoiding plastic.

It has been decided to prepare an integrated plan within three months on how much carbon gas is emitted in the Nilgiris district and how to reduce it. Out of the 3 crore saplings planted last year under the Tamil Nadu Green Mission, 80 per cent of the saplings have grown well with the cooperation of the people.

In Tamil Nadu, mangrove forests covering an area of 40 sq.kms have been protected. At present, action is being taken to identify and conserve mangroves covering an area of 60 sq km in 14 new districts.”

The event was attended by Deepak Bilji, Director, Department of Environment and Climate Change, District Collector Amrit, members of the Governing Council of the Government of Tamil Nadu and others.
