Coimbatore: Police have arrested three persons for allegedly robbing 100 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 2.5 crore in cash from the house of an elderly woman near Ramanathapuram.

Venkatesan hails from Greenfield Colony on Puliyakulam Road near Ramanathapuram in Coimbatore district.

His wife Rajeshwari (63) lives alone. While Rajeshwari was in the real estate business, Varshini, a native of Singanallur, became acquainted. As a result, Varshini frequently visited Rajeshwari's home.

Varshini had come to Rajeshwari's house on March 20. Around 100 sovereigns of gold and diamond jewellery and around Rs 2.5 crore in cash were stolen from Rajeshwari's house through her friends and the driver of the car.

Rajeshwari has lodged a complaint with Ramanathapuram police station. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and kept a close watch on the mobile numbers of Varshini and her friend Arun Kumar, who are absconding.

It has been reported that Arun Kumar and his assistants Praveen and Surender are hiding in Thiruvallur district.

The Special Cell then travelled to Kattoor hamlet near Tiruvallur and detained three people: Arun Kumar, Praveen, and Surrender.

They also confiscated Rs 2 lakh in cash and six pairs of gold bangles from their possession.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Rs 31 lakh, which was given to Arun Kumar's friend Karthik, was given to Salem income tax officers. He said to have handed the extra bling to another friend.

The three arrested were sent to court and imprisoned. The police are also looking for other suspects who have fled in the case.
