Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) candidates contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections after the party was launched. In the 2021 assembly elections, Samathuva Makkal Katchi contested in alliance with parties including IJK. It received only 2.5 percent of the vote in these elections.
Notably, Kamal Haasan who contested from Coimbatore South constituency in the 2021 assembly elections, got 51,481 votes over Congress candidate Mayura Jayakumar who contested in the elections in alliance with the DMK. Kamal Haasan's nearest rival Vanathi Srinivasanof BJP won with 53,209 votes, beating Kamal Haasan by a margin of around 2,000 votes to secure the Coimbatore South seat.
Kamal Haasan has been close to the DMK and the Congress in the recent past. Kamal Haasan also participated in the India Unity March organised by the Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Kamal Haasan also campaigned vigorously in favour of the Congress candidate E V K S Elangovan in the Erode East assembly elections held in February, last year.
It is being speculated that the MNM is likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the DMK as it is close to the Congress party and the DMK. On the occasion of DMK President, M K Stalin's 70th birth anniversary last month, Kamal Haasan inaugurated a photo exhibition titled 'Our Chief Minister is Our Pride' in Chennai.
Responding to a question on whether there was an alliance with the DMK, Haasan said, "This is not the time to talk about an alliance." He had hinted that everything was being done scene by scene to move the story forward and one should not ask what the climax was right now.
Kamal Haasan held a meeting with Coimbatore and Salem zonal office bearers in Coimbatore on Thursday to discuss the issue. At the very same Coimbatore South constituency, Kamal Haasan is again all set to contest the Lok Sabha elections with an aim to win the elections this time around.
According to the party, if the MNM decides to join the DMK alliance, it will definitely ask for the Coimbatore parliamentary seat and even if it decides to contest alone again, it will contest from the Coimbatore parliamentary constituency.
According to party sources, Kamal Haasan has decided to contest from Coimbatore parliamentary constituency this time since the MNM had secured a sizeable number of votes in Coimbatore district over other districts during the last assembly elections.
As far as the BJP is concerned, it is likely to field either the party's State President Annamalai or General Secretary A P Muruganantham in the Coimbatore parliamentary constituency. If Annamalai contests from the Coimbatore parliamentary constituency, the DMK alliance is also planning to rope in Kamal Haasan as part of the DMK alliance and field him against Annamalai.
There is no doubt that Coimbatore will be the most-watched constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
