Joining hands with Tippu Sultan, the king of Mysore, Dheeran Chinnamalai inflicted heavy losses to the East India Company forces in three battles at Siddheswaram, Mazhavalli and Seerangapattanam.
Coimbatore: Even as the 257th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai is being celebrated today, Karthik, DMK district secretary paid tributes to the late freedom fighter. He said that the sacrifices of the great freedom fighter should be recalled with reverence.
In a statement released here today, Karthik said “Dheeran Chinnamalai, who belonged to the Kongu region, was one of the foremost Tamil leaders who participated in the Indian freedom struggle. His 257th birth anniversary is being celebrated today. Dheeran Chinnamalai was also known as 'Theerthagiri Gounder' and 'Theerthagiri Sakkaraiâ€
The fiery freedom from the Kongu region was a nightmare for the East India Company and fought against them with great valour and died heroically.
Adding he said in his statement “Joining hands with Tippu Sultan, the king of Mysore, he inflicted heavy loses to the East India Company forces in three battles at Siddheswaram, Mazhavalli and Seerangapattanam against the British and also won in the battlesâ€
“It is imperative that a great son of the Kongu region should be celebrated for his valour. Dheeran Chinnamalai, who was born in Kongu soil, became a symbol of valour and made his fame last forever†he said.
In the meanwhile, various political parties and the general public have been garlanding the statue of Dheeren Chinnamalai in many parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai on his birth anniversary.
