Road side vendors at Power House area object to the eviction notice served on them

The notice for the evacuation of roadside vendors at the Powerhouse area surrounding Sivananda colony Coimbatore was issued about two weeks ago.

Coimbatore: About fifty vendors on Tuesday staged a protest during the Corporation Grievance day meeting conducted today, against the notice issued to evict pushcart shops and roadside vendors in the Power House area.

The notice for the evacuation of roadside vendors at the Powerhouse area surrounding Sivananda colony Coimbatore was issued about two weeks ago.

More than 150 roadside vendors' survival is dependent on these small-scale businesses, which are more than 20 years old.

Malika from Sivananda colony who runs a food stall at Power House said, "More than 100 families rely on these businesses. All of us have put up food stalls including breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening stalls. Our income is too little and if evacuated our livelihood would be affected”

The representative of the District Roadside vendors association submitted the petition requesting an allotment of an alternative site, so that they could continue with their business.

In this regard, a subtle argument prevailed which was later resolved.

The Corporation commissioner instructed them to run the shops without encroaching on the road space. . Also, he pointed out that most of them have been a hindrance to pedestrians blocking the parking zone.

Following the vendors' request the Commissioner in the presence of the city Mayor urged the respective Zonal officer to allocate appropriate space for them around the area.

In the meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor said that stringent action would be taken if complaints arise against them.
