Undue delay in appointment of 'scanner operator' for cargo handling affects services at City Airport, Rs 30 lakh revenue loss reported

On average, 850 tonnes of goods are being handled every month at the rate of 700 tonnes in the domestic cargo and 150 tonnes in the foreign cargo transshipment.

Coimbatore: Due to the delay in the appointment for the post of 'scanner operator' at the City Airport cargo office, domestic freight traffic has been affected for the last two months.

“Due to this, there has been a revenue loss of Rs 30 lakh in the last two months,” say reliable sources.

The Integrated Cargo terminal functions on the premises of City Airport in Peelamedu in the city.

Goods which are sent to different parts of the country as well as abroad are handled here. Goods are transported from the City airport through a service called 'Bonded Truck' to many countries.

On average, 850 tonnes of goods are being handled every month at the rate of 700 tonnes in the domestic cargo sector and 150 tonnes in the foreign cargo sector.

But, the shortage of staff due to the new rule issued by the Airports Authority of India in the appointment of scanner operators affects the services. Due to this, the movement of goods from the city airport has also been affected.

According to City Airport officials “In the domestic segment, goods sent from Coimbatore to various cities will be verified by scanner operators and will be transported on flights after granting permission. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced the new rule two months ago, in which scanning operators should be appointed only by the Airport Authority of India.

“Operations at 13 airports across the country, including Coimbatore, have been affected due to the new rule. In Tamil Nadu, employees have been appointed in Chennai. Domestic freight traffic in Trichy is not handled. There was a problem in Madurai too” he said.

“In this scenario, a minimum of five scanning operators are required. We have informed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) headquarters in this regard. Scanning operators are likely to be appointed by the end of this month” Airport officials said.
