5-10 per cent hike in toll fee from April 1

The toll rates at toll plazas across the country, including Tamil Nadu, will be hiked by 5-10 per cent from April 1. The rates for cars is expected to go up by Rs 5 to Rs 15.

Coimbatore: Toll fee is being charged for travelling in vehicles on national highways across India. Initially, there was a system of direct payment at the toll plazas.

Due to this, the vehicles had to stand at the toll plazas for a long time and wasted time. In order to avoid this, the scheme of collecting customs duty under FASTag system was implemented.

Accordingly, around 600 of the more than 800 toll plazas across the country are collecting toll fee. It is customary for the central government to revise this toll fee once a year. Accordingly, the National Highways Planning Authority of India (NHAI) has recommended a hike in toll charges by 5 to 10 per cent for this year.

There are reports that the customs duty will be hiked across the country from April 1. Out of the 55 toll plazas in Tamil Nadu, the hike will be implemented in 29 toll plazas. Based on this fare hike, the car will be priced higher by 5-15 rupees from April 1.

As far as the capital city of Chennai is concerned, the new hike will come into effect at the toll plazas in the suburbs including Paranur, Vanakaram, Soorapattu, Red hills and Pattarai Perumpudur.

Lorry owners' associations have also been protesting against the hike in the tariff, even as the public fears that the hike in the toll will lead to an increase in the price of goods vehicles and a rise in prices.
