Investigation into audio tapes released by Prashant Bhushan

In a notice dated March 23, 2016, CBI's anti-corruption branch has sought their "urgent presence" in connection with the preliminary enquiry (PE). "..Please inform a suitable date for your presence in the first week of April, 2016 to Atul Hajela, deputy SP in CBI at the earliest," the CBI notice reads.

The CBI has begun an investigation into a set of audio tapes released by Prashant Bhushan last year which allegedly contained voices of Shanmuganathan and the other two. CBI thinks that the conversation pertains to alleged kickbacks that different entities received, including privately held Kalaignar TV in which Karunanidhi's family members are shareholders. It is not clear if Kanimozhi, daughter of Karunanidhi and a shareholder of the TV channel, has also been asked to appear before the CBI for a deposition.

Shanmuganathan, who was a police writer in the 1960s, has been associated with Karunanidhi for nearly 50 years. He is always seen behind the DMK leader at public meetings taking notes of speeches by Karunanidhi in his trademark grey safari suit. Sharad Kumar was the first MD of Kalaignar TV when it was floated after the relationship between the Karunanidhi family and the Marans of Sun TV soured and reached a flashpoint, while Jaffer Sait was the state intelligence chief during the DMK rule. The 2G case is again back in the news weeks before Tamil Nadu goes to polls. On Saturday, MDMK chief Vaiko alleged that DMK treasurer MK Stalin was a beneficiary in the 2G scam. He demanded a CBI probe on Stalin. Supreme Court cancelled telecom licenses and spectrum for 122 applicants in 2012, over charges of corruption. Raja, Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar had all been jailed and are out on bail in the 2G case.
