New India Literacy Programme to benefit 20,995 Coimbatoreans

As a measure to provide basic literacy to the identified individuals, 1,558 centres have been assigned that include school premises and workspaces. Trained volunteers under the 'Samagra Shiksha' will educate the individuals in their respective centres.


Coimbatore: The New India Literacy Programme (NILP) is expected to benefit as many as 20,995 people of Coimbatore through a collaborative effort of the Department of School Education and the Directorate of Non-Formal and Adult Education.

The NILP scheme imparts basic literacy to individuals above the age of 15 with nil ability to read and write. According to the 2011 census, Coimbatore has recorded 20,995 people who cannot read and write. As a measure to provide basic literacy to the identified individuals, 1,558 centres have been assigned that include school premises and workspaces. Trained volunteers under the 'Samagra Shiksha' will educate the individuals in their respective centres.

In this regard, their basic education involves training them in the fundamental consonants, numbers and other primary tallies. Additional teaching includes fundamental rights, Indian electoral enrollment, bank/ post office/ railway documentation and legal documents.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has provided an introductory education kit to the beneficiaries of this scheme. The NILP benefits the 20,995 identified individuals of Coimbatore. Banners of NILP have been set up across the allocated centres and the District Education Office to create awareness regarding the scheme and encourage more participants to benefit from the literacy scheme.
