Sanitary staff protest at CMCH and ESI Hospital premises in Coimbatore

More than 100 sanitary staff participated in the protest at CMCH and more than 150 workers at the ESI Hospital premises demanding the immediate implementation of the order sanctioned for the wage hike up to Rs.721.

Coimbatore: Sanitary staff staged an indefinite protest on Thursday at Coimbatore Government Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), and ESI Hospital premises demanding the immediate implementation of the order sanctioned for the wage hike up to Rs.721.

More than 100 sanitary staff participated in the protest at CMCH and more than 150 workers at the ESI hospital.

The workers claimed that the contract company Crystal has been delaying their wage hike and has been providing them with Rs.412.

They also demanded a paid leave of four days in a month as per the Labour Law.

In this regard, Kala, a sanitary worker who has been employed for more than a decade stated that they are denied basic sanitary facilities and are being subjected to high work pressure.

Saanu, another sanitary worker alleged that though they are assigned to the housekeeping section, they are forced to do all the other work too within the hospital premises.

Despite all this heavy work, she further alleged that the hospital staff subject them to verbal abuse and ill-treat them.

Representing these workers Adv. Paneerselvam stated that these workers are denied the facilities mentioned as per the India Labour Law and are made to work even when ill.

"Though the Government has sanctioned the wage hike, the contractors are constantly delaying payment.

Multiple complaints have been filed in this regard against the contractors, yet the situation remains the same.

As a final step, these workers have decided to stage this indefinite protest unless their payment of Rs.721 is issued on an immediate basis," stated the advocate.

Currently, contract officials and representatives of the hospital are taking measures to negotiate with protestors and to resume work as soon as possible.
