3 arrested in kidnapping of construction contractor in Coimbatore

The turning point in the kidnapping case is the statement recorded by the police in which the gang confessed that the relatives of one of them, Murugan, had been duped of lakhs of rupees by Manikandan, the private contractor, on the pretext of getting them a Government job. Whenever they asked about the Government job, Manikandan reportedly stalled them for a long time and hence the gang decided to kidnap Manikandan due to his fraudulence and snatch their money from him.

Coimbatore: Manikandan (42), a resident of Anees Garden in Machampalayam, in Coimbatore's Sundarapuram area is a private construction contractor. His wife Maheshwari runs her own printing company.

Manikandan had gone to Coimbatore on December 25th for a wedding ceremony. During his absence, a gang of five persons, including a woman, entered his house when his wife was alone and enquired about Manikandan with threats.

Maheshwari informed her husband Manikandan who had gone for the wedding about the turn of events and when he returned home, the woman in the gang reportedly spoke for a while on the phone and then snatched the phones of Manikandan and his wife and switched them off.

Later, the five men forced Manikandan into a car and confined him to a hotel on the road from Karaikal to Nagapattinam. Manikandad was reportedly beaten up there with the gang demanding money and threatening him. Manikandan then transferred Rs. 5 lakh from his bank account to the woman's bank account. They also allegedly had Manikandan sign for a deed for Rs. 15 lakh and then released him.

Manikandan later lodged a complaint with the Podanur police who registered a case and began investigating the kidnapping. During investigation, it was revealed that Vanitha along with four others had abducted Manikandan in a car. Following this, the police launched a search for the five-member gang involved in the incident.

The police arrested Vanitha of Madukkarai, Murugan of Sirkali, and Raja, a relative of Murugan for abducting Manikandan and extorting money from him. Murugan, who was arrested, works as an Assistant at the registrar office in Kinathukadavu. Following this, the police questioned the three and found that Murugan's relatives had been duped of lakhs of rupees by Manikandan on the pretext of getting them a Government job.

Whenever Manikandan was asked about the Government job, he reportedly stalled them for a long time. The gang confessed to the police that they had kidnapped Manikandan due to his fraudulence and snatched their money from him. It is to be noted that statements of the five arrested have become a major turning point in the kidnapping case.
