Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran participated in the cultural programmes of the differently-abled persons to commemorate the 'International Day of Differently-Abled Persons' at Siddhapudur in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: The International Day of Differently-abled Persons is celebrated every year on December 3.

As part of this, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been organizing various competitions and awareness programmes for the differently-abled persons. The event also showcased smart phones worth Rs.1,62,588 for 12 hearing and visually-impaired students.

Cultural programmes were held at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Siddhapudur in Coimbatore on behalf of the District Differently-Abled Welfare Department, Coimbatore.

District Collector G S Sameeran participated in the event and enjoyed watching dances and plays performed with gusto by the students.

Later, the District Collector delivered a special address and distributed welfare assistance during the program.

Earlier, he was felicitated by the hearing- impaired persons who performed a parade accompanied with music.

The event also showcased smart phones worth Rs.1,62,588 for 12 hearing and visually-impaired students. Five modern artificial limbs worth Rs. 4,79,700 for differently-abled persons and battery-operated wheelchairs worth Rs.4,24,000 for four differently-abled persons were distributed. Similarly, two differently-abled persons were given CP Chairs worth Rs.20,800.

The Collector also distributed welfare assistance worth Rs.11.32 lakhs to 36 differently-abled persons including crutches worth Rs.1,200 each to two differently-abled persons and scholarships of Rs.4,000 each to 11 differently-abled students.
Speaking at the program, the District Collector stated, "There are about 53,000 differently-abled persons in Coimbatore district, out of which 2,715 differently-abled persons have registered with the Welfare Board and obtained identity cards. The differently-abled persons who were receiving a pension of Rs.1000 through the Revenue Department will now receive Rs. 1500 from January according to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin."
"Under the Sulur Part-III Project Area being done by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, houses will be allotted to 27 differently-abled persons on the ground floor to facilitate easy access to the differently-abled persons in the tenements constructed at the Pannimadai East project area.
Thus far, 520 centres have been provided to differently-abled persons for employment in the private sector. In addition, necessary welfare schemes and equipment are also being provided to the differently-abled persons through NGOs.
Our 'Tamil Thai' greeting song sung by the differently-abled people in sign language has become popular all over India. Hearty congratulations to all the children who used sign language to perform the song," commended the Collector.
