A consultative meeting on the new parcel service launched jointly by the Indian Railways and the Department of Posts was held at the Chamber Towers Auditorium on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Railway Board Managing Director Sathyakumar said: "On March 8, 2022, a proposal was chalked out to launch a new parcel service by merging the railways and the postal departments during the last budget announcement. A new parcel service has been launched from Surat city to Varanasi by the Railways and the Postal Department in collaboration.
Arrangements are being made to take the service to different parts of the country. A committee comprising officials from the two departments has been constituted and consultation meetings are being held", he said.
He said "the new parcel service will carry goods in a more secure manner, similar to the ones being transported by air. Modern arrangements have been made in the coaches to carry heavy goods.
The parcels are being brought to railway stations and taken back from the railway stations in the parcel service being carried out by the railways.
In this new parcel service to bring parcels from homes to the railway station, Sathyakumar said the postal department is also carrying out the work of transporting the train from the railway stations to the appropriate location, adding that the intermediate service is being carried out by the railways.
A dedicated mobile app is being designed to track the status of the parcels. Various information can be obtained about the whereabouts of the parcel.
Sathyakumar said that "heavy machinery manufacturers can benefit immensely from this service. It can easily transport heavy goods in a safe manner at the right price, he said.
Manufacturers from Coimbatore region, where there are a large number of mechanical and heavy spare parts manufacturers, msmes, will be greatly benefited by the service.
Apart from Coimbatore, textile industry in Tirupur and people from Erode, Salem and other places will also benefit from the service", he said.
