Bear enters Govt. Primary School in Ooty; Ransacks classroom in search of food

A bear entered a Government Primary School in Kadacholai area of Ullathi Panchayat near Ooty and reportedly looted goods. Locals have requested the Forest Department to capture the bear immediately and release it into the dense forest area.



The Nilgiris: A Government Primary School located in the Kadacholai area under Ullathi Panchayat near Ooty has more than 15 students, two teachers and a Headmaster at the school.



More than 150 families live in Kadacholai and Alkadu areas adjacent to the forest.

There have been reports of much bear movement in the area for the past few days.



A bear entered the Government School premises on Friday morning and broke open the door of the school classroom and entered the class.



The bear, which had come in search of food, ransacked the classroom by breaking open two cupboards belonging to teachers and students, and tore books.

Since there was no food to be found in the school, the bear disappeared into a nearby tea garden. Following a complaint lodged by the teachers, the Forest Department is in the process of monitoring the movement of bears around the school premises. People in the area have also demanded that the bear be captured quickly if it ventures back into the school premises.
