Fever ward and extra beds; CMCH all set to face monsoon ailments

We have our team of experts with required drugs, beds and ward ready to combat the impacts of monsoon, and our team shall take the necessary if and when required - Dean Nirmala

Coimbatore: An increase in the number of respiratory illnesses among kids in Tamil Nadu was evident in the last few days. Paediatricians across the state have warned of respiratory disease caused by a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as it is still prevalent besides COVID-19 and H1N1 flu.

In addition, doctors warn the arrival of the northeast monsoon would bring more impact to the health of adults and especially kids, as it causes various mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Chikungunyaa.

However, to combat the spread of RSV among kids, the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital(CMCH) braces for its impacts. Besides, it has installed as many as thirty beds in the newly added fever ward and ten beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to combat the seasonal flu, Nirmala, Dea of the CMCH, told Simplicity.

RSV spreads to the respiratory tract, causing pneumonia or bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airway passages entering the lungs) in children below two years.

Speaking to Simplicity, several health experts have warned that RSV, which causes mild cold, can lead to admission to ICU if not treated on time.

Kids who go to ICU have the highest chances of being on ventilator support, doctors said.

With social distancing, masks and hygiene maintenance, the spread was vastly limited among kids, thanks to the pandemic restrictions.

Dean Nirmala said the hospital is all set to combat the monsoon ailments as it has adequate beds, doctors, nurses and other significant needs ready.

“We have our team of experts with required drugs, beds and ward ready to combat the impacts of monsoon, and our team shall take the necessary if and when required”, she told Simplicity.

Meanwhile, health experts have also warned parents to protect kids from going into the water stagnated areas and keep a close watch on the symptoms among kids.
