'43 medical teams formed to prevent dengue and viral fever in Coimbatore:' Govt. Hospital Dean, Nirmala

The Health Department has formed 43 medical teams and are monitoring and treating students in Coimbatore, Annur, Sulur, Valparai and Pollachi.

Coimbatore: With the onset of the northeast monsoon, rains lashed several parts of Coimbatore district in the past one week. Due to this, it is reported that dengue fever has been spreading causing fear among the public.

To prevent as well as curb the spread of dengue fever in Coimbatore district, 43 special teams have been formed with special wards for treating patients with fever at the Government Hospital, according to the District Health Department.

Coimbatore District Health Department Deputy Director, Dr. Aruna said, "The incidence of fever has increased in Coimbatore for the past few days. Details of children admitted due to fever are obtained from private hospitals. Fever camps are conducted in more than 240 places in Coimbatore suburbs and corporation areas. 43 fever camp teams and 17 emergency teams have been set up as a precautionary measure for the monsoon season.

Each team consists of a doctor, nurse, medical staff and researchers. These teams go to schools and provide medical treatment to those with symptoms such as fever, cough and cold. Students receiving such treatment are being monitored continuously. Also, children are made aware about hygiene. Weekly meetings are also held for the Health Department to create awareness in areas where cases of dengue are high."

Coimbatore Government Hospital Dean, Dr. Nirmala said that in view of the monsoon, a separate ward with 42 beds including 2 ICU beds have been set up for treating patients with fever at the Coimbatore Government Hospital. She also advised the public that in the event of experiencing flu symptoms, people should not self-medicate and consult the nearest doctors.

Meanwhile, the special medical teams formed by the District Health Department are engaged in disease-prevention work in various areas including Annur, Perianaickenpalayam, Sulur, Thondamuthur, Valparai, Pollachi and Anaimalai. Public suffering with symptoms of flu like headache, chills, body aches and diarrhea have been warned to immediately approach the doctors and seek treatment.

The Health Department officials have stated that due to the onset of the northeast monsoon, consumption of unsafe food and drinking cold water could lead to fever, cold and diarrhea. They also warned of a possibility of increase in malaria and dengue fever cases due to the stagnation of rainwater in many areas.
