Demonstrations seeking action against railway official

Hundreds of railway employees attached to the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) staged demonstrations at the Coimbatore Junction and at Podanur Railway Station on Wednesday seeking arrest and disciplinary action against a Southern Railways official for ill-treating and humiliating women employees.

Divisional secretary of SRMU for Salem Division M. Govindhan said that women railway employees of the division met the Chief Commercial Manager of Southern Railways, Ajit Saxena, at his office in Chennai on Tuesday seeking redressal of the grievances the employees faced due to some of the initiatives of the officer.

“He humiliated them and called them a burden for the Railways,” he alleged.

Mr. Govindhan added that the women, who protested against his remarks were threatened by the officer. “He showed them a gun and threatened to kill them,” he said and added that a complaint in this connection was lodged before a top police officer in Chennai, but action is awaited.

The union urged the police to register a case against the Chief Commercial Officer for harassment of women and arrest him.

They also asked the top railway officials to take note of the incident and initiate disciplinary action against him. Demonstrations were also organised at the Salem and Erode junctions.

SRMU urged the police to register a case against the Chief Commercial Officer.
