Kovai Green League was formed in July 2016 jointly by Brookefields Mall, Bosch, Rotary Club of Coimbatore and NGO WWF, in the intent of spreading awareness among school students on green cover, environment conservation, wealth out of waste and effects of deforestation. Schools and individuals who have contributed to uplift and restore the environment through various eco-friendly initiatives were presented with the 'Greenest Campus' awards by the Kovai Green League (KGL).
Dr. Vijayakarthikeyan, Special Officer, CCMC presented the awards to the students and appreciated them for their thoughtful initiatives at the event conducted at Brookefields Mall.
Dr. Pramod, Principal, Salim Ali College of Ornithology and Nature (SAICON) and members of the kovai green league were present during the ceremony.
Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan when speaking at the award ceremony praised the award winners and congratulated the Kovai green league for working closely with the students. He also briefed on the on-going smart city project and the efforts taken by CCMC and NGOs towards safeguarding the environment from the hazards of plastic, educating residents on waste segregation and lake restoration projects.
He added that “Involving and encouraging students in such initiatives will help us reach the people and the goal effectively. Students should be made aware of the programmes and initiatives taken by the government and the organisations towards conserving our environment. Kovai green league team focuses more on conservation than growth. KGL should continue such to initiate such programmes and create awareness among the people about the need for conserving our environment'
Dr. Pramod, Principal, SAICON said “Kovai Green League is a good initiative and has a huge potential. Nature is very important for our existence. Hence, KGL should continue to host similar initiatives in the future too” he said.
Corporation Middle School Ramasamy Nagar, Corporation Higher Secondary School Peelamedu, and Corporation High School in Puliakulam were the three schools which were accoladed with the Greenest Campus awards.

Under the private schools category, The Western Ghats International School, Yuvabharathi Public School and Ksirs International School were presented with the award followed by special recognition award to The Camford International School and The SNS academy.

Under individual category, M. Yoganathan was felicitated for plating more than 120000 saplings and for creating awareness about trees at 3000 educational institutions. Krishna Pillai was awarded for spreading awareness on the importance of water by cycling from Coimbatore to New Delhi, three times. Chithra Krishnasamy, was awarded for spreading awareness on terrace gardening and on the importance of re-using kitchen wastes and transforming them into organic composites.
Volunteers of KGL, Sangeetha Subhash, Saravanan Chandrasekar and Kanagaraj Thangavel were also feliciatetd at the event for the sessions they conducted on wealth out of waste, green cover and organic farming.
Volunteers of KGL, office bearers of Rotary Club of Coimbatore, officials from Bosch along with students, teachers from schools were present during the award ceremony.
