The stage is set for the election of DMK working president M.K. Stalin as the president of the party on August 28 when the DMK general council is slated to meet. The president’s post had fallen vacant following the death of M. Karunanidhi. DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan on Monday announced that the general council would elect the president and treasurer of the party.

The audit committee report of the party would also be placed before the general council.

Mr. Stalin is currently holding the post of treasurer in addition to being the working president. Sources said the party is also likely to elect DMK veteran Duraimurugan as the treasurer. He is presently the principal secretary of the party.

Nominations for the two posts will be invited at the general council and a senior leader of the party would function as the election officer. However, no one is expected to enter the fray against Mr. Stalin.

The DMK is holding meetings at various centres in memory of M. Karunanidhi. National leaders will attend a public meeting in Chennai on August 31.

Mr. Stalin’s elevation before that would help him step into his father’s shoes ahead of the meeting.
