As heavy rains have disrupted routine life in Mumbai, Shatabdi Express has been cancelled today. The premier train that plys between Mumbai and Ahmedabad was terminated at Nallasopara due to the flooding of tracks after heavy rains in Mumbai.

The Western Railway said today that services between Bhayander and Virar have been suspended due to heavy rains and waterlogging on railways tracks at Nallasopara. However, trains between Bhayander and Churchgate are running on all lines.

Schools in Thane and Palghar district will remain closed due to the erratic weather conditions. Principals of schools in Mumbai have been instructed to take a call on school closure gauging the waterlogging in adjacent areas.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra government minister Vinod Tawde said that there was no situation of waterlogging in Mumbai. "Concerned authorities are keeping track of the situation. There's nothing to worry as disaster management is ready to face any situation," he said.

Heavy rains brought Mumbai and its neighbouring areas to a standstill today, flooding streets and badly affecting life. The city has been experiencing heavy rains since Saturday.

Due to waterlogging and disrupted rail services, Mumbai's dabbawalas have suspended their services for the day.

Waterlogging was reported from several low-lying areas, resulting in traffic congestion. Local train services were suspended between Western Railway's Vasai Road and Virar stations due to high water levels while flights at the Mumbai airport were delayed by around 30 minutes.

Several schools across Mumbai have declared a holiday as a result of incessant rains.

3 DAYS OF HEAVY RAINS

Many roads in the metropolis are flooded and people are seen wading through knee-deep water.

A 43-year-old woman riding a motorcycle as a pillion was crushed by a bus after the vehicle hit a waterlogged pothole in adjoining Thane district of Maharashtra. The shocking incident was captured on CCTV cameras.

Due to waterlogging, around 300 people were stuck in their homes in Vasai town of the adjoining Palghar district.

However, they refused to be evacuated even as the water level rose, a district information officer said.

The residents preferred to stay in their homes instead of relocating to some temporary shelter in response to the district administration's appeal for evacuation, he said.

Some of them accepted food packets given by the administration, he said.

"We have kept an ambulance near their homes as a precautionary measure," the officer said.

The downpour of 170 mm (recorded in Colaba observatory for Mumbai city) from 8.30 am on Sunday morning till 8.30 am on Monday was the highest in a 24-hour period during the current monsoon season, the Meteorological Department's Deputy Director General, K S Hosalikar, said.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the metropolis has received 54 per cent of its average monsoon season rainfall just in the last 20 days.

The rainfall slowed down the pace of the financial capital, which is heavily dependent on local train services.

Though the intensity of showers eased as the day progressed, it took longer time for the city traffic to revert to its pace.

As many as 87 local services on the Central Railway (CR) and the Western Railway (WR) were cancelled on Monday due to heavy rains, said officials.

Schools and colleges were shut in Mumbai, while the Mumbai University said examinations will be rescheduled for students who could not appear for them on the due date.

There was heavy waterlogging in Mumbai's central areas of Kurla, Sion and Dadar. Mira Road (in adjoining Thane district), Nalasopara and Vasai (in Palghar district) were largely affected due to the heavy showers.

Many government and semi-government establishments curtailed their office hours to allow their employees to leave for home early.
