The PM has already interacted beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana through video conferencing. While interacting with women beneficiaries who received free cooking gas connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Modi said 10 crore LPG connections, including 4 crore connections free to poor women, were given in last four years compared to 13 crore in six decades since independence.
“Till 2014, only 13 crore LPG connections were given. These were mostly to rich and affluent class. In the past four years, we have given 10 crore new LPG connections, mostly to poor,” he said, adding, “Ujjwala Yojana has strengthened the lives of the poor, marginalised, dalits, tribal communities.”
On June 5, the prime minister interacted with Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana beneficiaries from across the country and harped on the fact that the government was working to free the housing sector of corruption and middlemen to ensure people got their own houses without any trouble. Modi also said the use of latest technology was ensuring that houses for the poor in rural and urban areas were being built at a quicker pace and at an affordable cost.
“Even a poor man dreams of owning a house. But even so many years after Independence, his dreams have remained dreams. Our government had decided that by 2022, by when it will be 75 years to our Independence, every family in India, the poorest in villages and cities will have a pucca house. We have been working to free the housing sector from middlemen, corruption and ensuring that the beneficiaries get their own home without hassles,” he said.
The PM put a deadline of 2025 to eradicate India of tuberculosis even as he said that access to medicines was a big concern for the poor when he interacted with the beneficiaries of ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana (PMJAY)’– a government initiative that provides medicines at affordable prices – on June 7.
Noting that the government had reduced stent prices substantially, which has benefited the poor and middle class mostly, Modi said his government’s constant endeavor was to ensure affordable healthcare for every Indian. “Access to medicines is a big concern for the poor… Our constant endeavor is to ensure affordable healthcare to every Indian,” he said.
