While taking a flight to anywhere is convenient, not all of us can avail that option because of the steep ticket prices. Over the years, however, air travel has become quite affordable, largely due to low-cost air carriers entering the market.

If a recent report is to be believed, Asia is the cheapest when it comes to air travel. And India is in the list too.

In fact, low-cost carriers IndiGo and Air India Express have been ranked among the top five cheapest airlines in the world that provide international connectivity.

Air India Express, the wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run carrier Air India, has been ranked second and the budget carrier IndiGo is placed at fifth position in a Global Flight Pricing Report.

How cheap are the two airlines on the domestic front?

We took a look at the rates of flights within the nearest flying sectors. An Express Value ticket of Air India Express from Kochi to Kozhikode in Kerala, a month from now, would cost approximately Rs 2126.

For its Flexi option, the price is Rs 6536.

In the case of IndiGo, a Saver ticket on a flight from Delhi to Jaipur on 28th June, 2018 will cost Rs 1226 while a Flexi ticket costs Rs 1386.

The report has been prepared by Melbourne-based multi model travel planning site, Rome2rio.

Jet Airways earned the 12th place, followed by Air India at the 13th position.

For a Jet Airways flight from Delhi to Jaipur, the tickets start at Rs 1109 and go up to Rs 7516, depending on whether you choose to fly deal saver or deluxe. For Air India, a flight between the two destinations would be Rs 1552.

The report compared nearly 200 major airlines across continents by the average price per kilometer with AirAsia X taking the pole position.

AirAsia X, at the top, has an average of USD 0.07 or Rs. 4.72 per km.

The data was analysed by taking into account the economy class airfares displayed by Rome2rio during the first two months of this year. It totalled some 1.5 million price points.

According to the report that was released this month, four out of the top five cheapest airlines are in Asia.

Indonesia AirAsia and the Primera Air are the other two that have been put in the top five.

Etihad, Ryanair, Qantas, Wow Air and Virgin Australia found place among the top ten affordable airlines.

Wow Air recently announced that it was connecting Delhi with 15 North American cities through its hub in Reykjavik in Iceland from December 7 onwards, with the base price starting at Rs 13,499 one way.

On the other hand, none of the airlines from the UK or US found a place among the top 10 affordable airlines in the report.
