Arvind Kejriwal's nephew arrested in Delhi PWD scam

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested a kin of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Vinay Bansal in connection with alleged irregularities in road and sewer development works by the Public Works Department (PWD).

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested a kin of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Vinay Bansal in connection with alleged irregularities in road and sewer development works by the Public Works Department (PWD). Vinay Bansal is the son of Kejriwal's deceased brother-in-law Surendra Kumar Bansal.

Vinay Bansal was a partner in his father's firm, the Renu Construction, which is allegedly involved in the PWD scam. The Renu Construction allegedly got a PWD contract in 2015 using his influence as Kejriwal's relative. Besides probing the alleged fake bills submitted for payment for construction of a drains in Delhi, the ACB is also looking in the quality of work done by the firm.

The ACB filed three FIRs on May 8 last year in connection with the PWD scam against Kejriwal and others. The complainant was filed by Rahul Sharma, the founder of NGO Roads Anti-Corruption Organisation (RACO), alleged that the tender was awarded at 46 per cent lower than the estimated cost of Rs 4.90 lakh.

According to these FIRs, the Delhi PWD committed illegitimate favoritism in awarding a tender to Surendra Kumar Bansal's the Renu Construction for road and sewer construction projects. It was also alleged that the product quality was inferior.

Incidentally, the contract was awarded to Bansal's firm in February 2015 before Kejriwal government came to power while the FIRs were filed in 2017.

The Delhi Police stated that the arrest was made based upon the unsatisfactory answers of the accused during the questioning, regarding Mahadev Company from whom the company claimed to have bought the raw materials. In the course of the investigation, Mahadev Company was found to be non-existent.

However, the Delhi government alleged political vendetta behind the arrest, claiming that the construction work undertaken by Bansal's firm was given a clean chit by Sriram Labs, which was directed by the ACB to do the inspection. It also claimed that a third party certification of the construction was done by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

The AAP has called the arrest as vendetta politics. It said that after the Modi governemnt failed to implicate Arvind Kejriwal and AAP MLAs in false cases, it "stoops low to target Kejriwal's relatives".
