State Government employees under the Tamil Nadu Government Employees’ Association banner staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate and other government offices in the district and also in neighbouring The Nilgiris district urging the State Government to hold talks.
In Coimbatore, the Association employees said that on the sixth day of their protest on Monday, members of the primary school teachers’ association had extended support by going on indefinite strike. The noon meal employees had also extended their support.
Members of the judiciary employees association had held a token protest on Monday and promised to support them by boycotting work on Wednesday, a leader of the TNGEA, here, said.
In the past six days of protest, the protesting workers were forced to change their main demand from addressing their 20-point grievances to urging the Government to invite them for talks.
Sources said that around 1,500 employees in Coimbatore and more than 5,000 in other parts of the district participated in the protest.
In The Nilgiris district, the police removed 1,233 persons who participated in the protest. After shouting slogans, the workers staged a road roko near ATC in Ooty. Employees in Gudalur also participated in strike.
