Coimbatore : With increase in passengers footfall, the Southern railway which had planned to replace the conventional rake between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam to Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) will be launching the new MEMU service from October 31.
Anticipating, potential for further growth in passenger footfall, the railways decided to acquire a MEMU train for the route. The Southern Railways estimates that after setting up of Periya Naickenpalayam and Thudiyalur stations, people using the train will considetably shoot up.
With debut service all set to commence from Mettupalayam railway station tomorrow, the rail passengers are delighted to experience the faster and more comfortable train service between Coimbatore and Mettupalayam.
Though the seating between a MEMU and a conventional rake would remain the same, the MEMU is designed with more space for commuters to stand and travel. Also, the pickup speed of the MEMU is twice when compared to the conventional train.
This MEMU train service was introduced in India in the year 1990s to improve connectivity between suburban areas. These MEMU trains can be operated at speeds of up to 105 kilometres per hour for short distances.
