Total Solar Eclipse 2016: Some parts of India will be completely dark; All you need to know

New Delhi, March 7: On Wednesday India along with world will witness a total solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) which will be seen taking place during the sunrise. Most of the parts in India will be completely dark except some parts of North West and Western India.

A total solar eclipse which is rare takes place when the moon moves between the earth and sun blocks the light of the sun to people on earth. The eclipse will be visible to people in South Asia, East Asia and Australia.

In India the eclipse will start before sunrise and will stretch to other parts of India within four hours. According to the Ministry of Earth and Science the start of eclipse will take place just early morning after sunrise from North-East India from there it will move eventually in West direction. The maximum duration will be upto one hour.

On Wednesday the total eclipse phase will begin at 5:47 am (IST) and will last till 9:08 am. The partial phase will end at 10:00 am (IST).

The last solar eclipse of such significance was seen on 11 August 1999, when almost 100 percent of the sun was covered. The total solar eclipse can last for at least 7.5 minutes.

In India, the solar eclipse will be visible 15 percent in Agartala, 24.5 percent in Bhubaneswar, 11 percent in Guwahati, 18.5 percent in Kolkatta, 12 percent in Patna, 49 percent in Port Blair, 12 percent in Silchar.

This year in India there will be four solar eclipse. On March 9 – total solar eclipse, March 23 – lunar eclipse, September 1 – solar eclipse, September 16 – lunar eclipse.

Eclipse whether its a solar or lunar is a natural phenomenon that takes place on earth when the path between earth-sun or earth-moon is obstructed by a planet.
