Workers working in the tea garden are required to work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. While in the tea garden, elephants, leopards, tigers, bears and bison attack and sometimes even kill them. Workers have a hard time picking tea in the pouring rain during the rainy season and they are required to pluck 50 kg of tea a day
There are over 50,000 tea plantation workers in the Valparai area of Coimbatore district. It has 60 estates with both small and large companies. From 2016 to 2021, the salary of tea plantation workers is 348 rupees. As the current 4-year contract expired on 31.6.21, the new salary agreement will be negotiated by the union and the estate management, the government to determine the salary increase. This negotiation is currently pending and the workers have demanded the Chief Minister to declare the salary of the tea plantation workers at Rs. 500 in the forthcoming assembly session.
