EPFO Wage Ceiling Revision: Coimbatore Officials Explain Benefits for Formal Sector Employees

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the monthly wage ceiling for mandatory coverage under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. The decision is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under the statutory social security framework, strengthening access to provident fund, pension and insurance benefits.

The proposal, submitted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was approved during the Union Cabinet meeting held on September 16, 2026. The revised wage ceiling seeks to align EPFO coverage with sustained wage growth, rising incomes and the expansion of formal employment over the past decade.

Speaking to the media in Coimbatore, Swagata Roy, Additional Commissioner of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), described the decision as “fantastic news” for employees in the formal sector.

She said the revision would apply from September 17 onwards and benefit not only employees but also employers by helping create a more structured workforce and widen social security protection for employees. According to her, the expanded coverage could encourage employee retention, improve workforce reliability and promote upskilling, thus benefiting employers.

Briefing the media on the Coimbatore Regional EPFO Office, which has administrative jurisdiction over 30 districts in Tamil Nadu, she said approximately 33.54 lakh members working across 46,097 establishments fall under its jurisdiction. Around 5.52 lakh pensioners receive benefits through the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS).

The EPFO wage ceiling was last increased in September 2014, when it was raised from ₹6,500 to ₹15,000. Under the existing framework, employees joining an establishment at a monthly wage exceeding ₹15,000 are not automatically brought under mandatory EPF coverage. The latest revision will extend compulsory coverage to a substantial section of employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month, officials who were present at the meeting explained.

The enhanced ceiling will expand access to provident fund savings, pension benefits under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and insurance protection through the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), subject to the applicable scheme provisions. It is also intended to ensure that the statutory contribution and pensionable-wage framework better reflects prevailing income levels.

The proposal underwent detailed inter-ministerial consultations and was recommended by the Expenditure Finance Committee at its meeting on June 16, 2026. The estimated annual government expenditure under the revised framework is approximately ₹11,339 crore, compared with the existing annual budgetary support of around ₹10,250 crore. The projected expenditure over five years is estimated at ₹56,696 crore.

The EPFO administers three major statutory social security schemes—the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI).

According to the latest EPFO data cited by the Ministry, the organisation has approximately 7.98 crore contributing members across 7.68 lakh contributing establishments, while the EPS provides pension benefits to around 82 lakh pensioners.
