Coimbatore PMK submits petition to the District Collector against reopening of liquor shops

The Coimbatore District PMK cadres petitioned to the District Collector, K Rajamani against the reopening of liquor shops in the state.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore District PMK cadres on Wednesday petitioned against the reopening of liquor shops in the state.

Over the past 43 days, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, all liquor shops were closed in TN. On May 5, the State liquor shops in the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Andhra were reopened. Owing to this people from TN borders bombarded into other State borders to buy liquor.

To prevent the movement of people to the neighbouring states to buy alcohol, the TN government had announced of opening TASMAC shops withrestrictions in TN. However, many political parties and Women organisations have vehemently condemned the move.

Joining the bandwagon of condemnations, the Coimbatore district PMK submitted a petition to the District Collector K Rajamanj today opposing the decision of the State government.

Speaking regarding this, the District President of PMK, Kumar said, "PMK founder Dr.Ramadoss has continously urging for a complete prohibition of alcohol in the State for the past 35 years. Even Anbumani Ramadoss has opined that this is the right time for the government to bring about a change and implement alcohol ban."

He added that "99% of alcoholics have have given up drinking. The government should make use of this situation positively and announce complete liquor ban in TN. Moreover, reopening of liquor shops will escalate the spread of COVID-19 and thereby add distress to the ongoing pandemic situation. Hence, the PMK has petitioned to the district collector against the reopening of liquor shops in the state, tomorrow."
