Tirupur: Tirupur Police arrested Mohammed Ibrahim (20) from Tirumalai Nagar, Nesavalar Colony Tirupur for impersonating as the City Police Commissioner and for duping a youth Vinoth Kumar of Tirunelveli.
According to Police, Mohammed Ibrahim changed his phone number, the digits of which almost looked like that of the Police Commissioner’s mobile phone. It is learnt by the Police that the culprit has cheated several people like Vinoth Kumar after impersonating to be the Police Commissioner.
One of the victims, Vinoth Kumar from Tirunelveli, who wanted to report a complaint to the Tirupur Police Commissioner on a personal issue had searched the internet to get his contact number to connect with him directly from Tirunelveli.
Vinoth Kumar noted down a number from the internet which claimed to be that of the Police Commissioner of Tirupur. When he called, the speaker on the other end posed to be the Police Commissioner and listened to Vinoth Kumar's complaint and assured that necessary action will be taken and also asked him to deposit Rs.4000 to his personal bank account claiming to be fuel expenses for investigating on the complaint.
Vinoth Kumar deposited Rs.3500 on the given account and tried calling the number again. He was shocked to find the number switched off, and got suspicious and enquired the police department. He later found that he was cheated out of his money.
Vinoth Kumar then made a formal complaint to the Tirupur Police about the incident and the fraudster, who later swooped on him before arresting him.
