Coimbatore: The Untouchability Eradication Front petitioned the District Collector K Rajamani today with regard to the tragic death of three sanitary workers who lost their lives due to asphyxiation caused by toxic fumes from the pig sewer they were cleaning. They demanded that an immediate relief fund of Rs.10 lakhs and a Government job be granted to any one member of the deceased family.

The owner, Subramaniam (70) was booked under four sections including Section 284 (Negligent conduct with respect to poisonous substance likely to hurt or cause danger to any person), section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act and Rehabilitation Act (2013).

Meanwhile Sivagnanam, the State Deputy General Secretary of Untouchability Eradication Front, C Venmani, the President of Dravida Tamil Katchi, Aaruchami, the District President of Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) together petitioned the District Collector demanding immediate relief assistance of Rs.10 Lakhs and a Government job to any one member of the family to be granted since the deceased were the only breadwinners of their respective families.
