Woman attacked by elephant dies

A 40-year-old tribal woman attacked by a wild elephant three days ago died at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.

The victim K. Saraswathy was attacked by the elephant at Perumalkovilpathy village, near Mangalapalayam West, at Alandurai late on Monday evening while grazing goats.

Later, local residents rescued her and admitted her at the CMCH.

Forest Department handed over a cheque for Rs. 25,000 as immediate relief to the victim’s family. The remaining Rs. 2.75 lakh will soon be given to the family.

Meanwhile, forest staff have been chasing a wild elephant that reportedly indulged in crop raids in the agricultural fields in and around Madukkarai.

“We have successfully chased the elephant at Solakkarai. We are assessing damages to agricultural fields and properties,” Madukkarai Forest Ranger M. Senthil Kumar said.
