Coimbatore: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) seized Rs. 57,000 in unaccounted cash from a Food Safety Officer's room during a surprise raid at the Coimbatore Corporation's Food Safety Department office in Puliyakulam.
The raid followed allegations that food safety officials were collecting bribes from shops ahead of Deepavali. Acting on a tip-off, a DVAC team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Immanuel Gnanasekaran conducted the inspection at the department's office.
During the inspection, officials found six envelopes of cash containing a total of Rs. 57,000 on the table in the room of Ramasamy, 45, a Food Safety Officer from Coimbatore. Ramasamy reportedly failed to provide a proper explanation for the cash found in his room.
The vigilance officials seized the unaccounted money and are continuing their inquiry into the matter.
