Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has collected 21.46 metric tonnes of discarded electronic and electrical waste across its five zones under the nationwide Special Campaign 6.0, conducted from October 2 to 31.
Launched by the Government of India, Special Campaign 6.0 is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness, effective e-waste collection and scientific disposal, while encouraging the responsible management of discarded electronic equipment. As part of the campaign, the Coimbatore Corporation organised a month-long special drive across all five zones to ensure the systematic collection and environmentally safe disposal of e-waste.
To encourage public participation, collection centres were established with the slogan, "Give E-Waste – Get a Yellow Bag". Several awareness activities, including rallies, kolam competitions, awareness camps, e-waste exhibitions and two-wheeler rallies, were organised during the campaign. School students, self-help group members and members of the public participated in these initiatives.
Through the drive, unusable electronic devices and electrical appliances from households across the five zones were collected separately and handed over for scientific recycling and safe disposal. The corporation recorded a total collection of 21.46 metric tonnes of e-waste.
According to the corporation, the initiative helped prevent an estimated 69,209.6 kg of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of around 3,460 trees. The campaign also contributed to reducing environmental pollution through the proper collection and disposal of discarded electronic waste.
Appreciating the efforts behind the campaign, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja presented a certificate of appreciation to Green Era Recyclers on October 31 for their contribution to the e-waste management initiative.
City Health Officer Dr. B. P. Sankaranthi and North Zone Health Officer Dr. Murugan, along with representatives of Green Era Recyclers, were present.
