Coimbatore: Six people were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each, along with a fine, in a child trafficking case dating back to July 2015, with the verdict delivered on October 28, 2026, by Chief Judicial Magistrate Sivakumar at the Coimbatore court.
According to a press release issued by Coimbatore City Police, the case originated on July 28, 2015, when Meena, the complainant, was taken by her husband Raman and his friend Kumarasamy on the pretext of going on a tourist trip to Kanniyakumari.
With the assistance of Thangachamy and Rita, who was working as a nurse in Kanniyakumari, Meena's one-year-old daughter was allegedly sold, without her knowledge, for ₹2.25 lakh to Vijayakumar and his wife Rani Prabha, a couple from Kanniyakumari district who did not have children.
The accused allegedly staged the incident as a case of the child going missing. Following this, Meena approached the police. As the incident had taken place within the limits of Coimbatore City Police, a case was registered at E2 Peelamedu Police Station, and the accused were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
The case was tried before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Coimbatore. On October 28, 2026, the court found all six accused — Raman, Kumarasamy, Thangachamy, Rita, Vijayakumar and Rani Prabha — guilty and sentenced each of them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine.
The press release noted that although Meena turned hostile during the trial, prosecution lawyer Raman argued the case effectively and secured the conviction of the accused.
Senior police officials commended Peelamedu Police Inspector Gopi and Inspector Rajeswari, who had served in the Coimbatore City Police Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, for investigating the case, arresting the accused and filing the charge sheet. Other police personnel involved in the investigation and the court proceedings, including Head Constables Subramaniam (HC 914) and Sureshwaran (HC 1935), were also appreciated for their work.
