Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja has instructed officials to intensify monsoon preparedness measures across the city, with heavy rainfall forecast over the next three to four days, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable areas and immediate response to rain-related complaints.
The directions were issued during a review meeting held on Wednesday, October 21, at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) conference hall in R.S. Puram.
During the meeting, the Commissioner reviewed precautionary measures to be undertaken across all five Corporation zones in coordination with other departments. Discussions covered the construction of new stormwater drains, expansion of existing drainage networks, and procurement of high-capacity motors, pumps and equipment required for rain-related emergencies.
To ensure uninterrupted relief operations, the Corporation has allocated Rs 10 lakh to each of its five zones. The funds will be used to rent generators, motors, pumps and other necessary equipment and deploy additional personnel wherever required.
Assistant commissioners of all zones were instructed to ensure that staff and water-suction motor vehicles were stationed in advance in low-lying areas prone to water-logging so that stagnant rainwater could be removed without delay, and to undertake sanitation works to avoid foul smells and disease-spreading scenarios. They were also directed to inspect relief camps in person and verify the availability of essential facilities to accommodate residents safely whenever evacuation became necessary.
Directives were also given to inspect educational institutions, apartment complexes and other buildings to verify whether rainwater harvesting structures had been installed. Katta Ravi Teja stressed that complaints received from the public regarding rain-related problems must be addressed immediately by the concerned departments.
Earlier, the Commissioner inspected stormwater drains in Balaji Nagar, Rajan Nagar, K.K. Nagar and Kuttaikadu, located in Ward 34 of the West Zone. He directed officials to desilt the drains and ensure the free flow of rainwater to minimise the risk of waterlogging.
Deputy Commissioner R. Saraswathi, Corporation Chief Engineer Vijayakumar, Education Committee Chairperson Malathi Nagaraj, Assistant Commissioners Narmadha, Mohanasundari, Ganesan, Dakshinamurthy and Muthukumar, along with assistant executive engineers, zonal health officers, assistant engineers, health inspectors and other Corporation officials, participated in the inspection and review meeting.
