Coimbatore: The much-awaited Periyar Arivulagam and Research Centre, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore near Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand in Coimbatore, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on October 16.
Envisioned as a major centre for reading, scientific learning and research, the landmark project was initiated under the previous DMK government, with then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laying its foundation stone on November 6, 2024. The project was announced in the Tamil Nadu Budget for 2024–25 to expand access to knowledge, encourage reading and promote scientific learning.
Developed by the Public Works Department (PWD), the complex has been constructed on 6.98 acres of land that earlier belonged to the Central Prison. The eight-level structure, comprising a ground floor and seven upper floors, has a built-up area of approximately 1.98 lakh square feet. The facility integrates a public library with a science learning centre and is designed to accommodate around 1.25 lakh books. With dedicated reading spaces, research facilities and modern educational amenities, the centre is expected to serve students, researchers and the general public while emerging as a prominent knowledge hub in western Tamil Nadu.
The building has been planned with specialised facilities across its different floors. The ground floor will house a library for persons with disabilities, while the second floor will feature a children's library and a self-reading section. The third floor will accommodate a library for competitive examination aspirants and administrative offices.
Among the key attractions are a 350-seat auditorium, a science centre and a planetarium. A specially designed, space-themed lift is intended to simulate a space-travel experience, adding an interactive and educational element to the facility. The complex also includes extensive parking facilities designed to accommodate nearly 200 cars and 450 two-wheelers.
The establishment of Periyar Arivulagam marks a significant addition to Coimbatore's public educational infrastructure. By combining a large public library with scientific exhibits, a planetarium and dedicated learning spaces, the project is intended to promote reading habits, scientific curiosity and research among people of different age groups.
According to the proposed inauguration schedule, Chief Minister Vijay will arrive at Coimbatore International Airport at 11 am on October 16, where dignitaries are expected to welcome him by presenting books. He is scheduled to reach the inauguration venue in Gandhipuram at 11.45 am, where he will unveil a statue of social reformer Periyar and the commemorative plaque of Periyar Arivulagam.
Following the inauguration, the Chief Minister is expected to inspect various sections of the complex, including the reception area, science centre, children's library, reading sections and digital library. During the official function, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare is expected to deliver the welcome address, while dignitaries will present a memento to the Chief Minister.
The programme is also expected to include the inauguration of several completed government projects, the laying of foundation stones for new development works and the distribution of welfare assistance to 100 beneficiaries. The Chief Minister is expected to address the gathering before the programme concludes with the District Collector's vote of thanks and the National Anthem. The Chief Minister is scheduled to return to Coimbatore International Airport around 1.40 pm.
Ahead of the visit, Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, Western Zone Inspector General of Police Ramya Bharathi and other senior officials have inspected the venue and reviewed security arrangements. Cleaning operations along the surrounding roads and streets have also been intensified, while traffic management and security measures are being strengthened in preparation for the inauguration.
