Coimbatore: A series of thefts targeting student hostels in Coimbatore has raised serious concerns among students and private-sector employees, after CCTV footage emerged showing a suspected thief targeting accommodation facilities in Peelamedu and Avarampalayam.
The incidents come close on the heels of a reported theft at a hostel in the Pappanaickenpalayam–Sidhapudur area, where a laptop and mobile phones belonging to Harikrishna, a student of a private college, were allegedly stolen from his hostel room on October 11.
Harikrishna lodged a complaint with the C2 Race Course Police Station, stating that he and his friends were staying at an accommodation facility in Jayasimapuram, Pappanaickenpalayam. On October 11, four mobile phones and a laptop were allegedly stolen from their rooms.
As part of the ongoing investigation, CCTV footage showing a suspected person targeting accommodation facilities housing college students and private-sector employees in Peelamedu and Avarampalayam has emerged. The footage reportedly shows the suspect entering hostel premises and moving into rooms when occupants were asleep or absent.
The police are trying to identify the person seen in the CCTV footage, who is seen entering the accommodation premises with bare hands and returning with a bag.
The thefts have heightened concerns over the security of student accommodation facilities, with students and members of the public urging the police to intensify patrolling in the affected areas and prevent further incidents.
