Coimbatore: A 34-year-old woman was arrested in Coimbatore for allegedly cheating a Chennai couple of ₹1.77 lakh by promising to arrange the legal adoption of a child through a trust.
According to the complaint, Jamal Mohamed, a resident of Tiruvottiyur in Chennai, and his wife Amrin Taj, 34, had been married for 12 years without children and decided to pursue legal adoption.
The couple reportedly became acquainted with Sathiyaseela, 34, who ran a shop near Pasumai Pharmacy on Lakshmi Mills Road in Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore. She allegedly assured the couple that she could arrange the adoption through a trust in Chennai.
Trusting her assurance, Amrin Taj reportedly paid Sathiyaseela a total of ₹1.77 lakh on September 3 through cash payments and instalments via PhonePe.
However, after receiving the money, Sathiyaseela allegedly stopped providing updates. When Amrin Taj visited the trust in Chennai to enquire about the adoption, she reportedly found that no such request or arrangement had been made.
When she subsequently confronted Sathiyaseela and demanded a refund of her money, Sathiyaseela allegedly refused to return the money and threatened her.
Following a complaint lodged at the Ramanathapuram police station, police inquired into the matter and registered a case. Sathiyaseela was sent to prison under judicial custody.
