Repeat Offender Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Possessing Country-Made Explosives in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: A repeat offender, Rangan alias Rangasamy, has been sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison and fined ₹10,000 in two cases involving the possession of country-made explosives, locally known as Avukukkai, allegedly intended for hunting wildlife within the Perur police station limits in Coimbatore district.The verdict was delivered on October 9, 2026, by the Special Court for Bomb Blast Cases in Coimbatore.
Rangasamy was arrested in 2021 and again in 2022 for allegedly possessing country-made explosives and wild boar meat. Cases were registered against him on both occasions, and he was subsequently released on bail.In 2024, he was caught again after sustaining injuries while allegedly making country-made explosives along with his accomplice, Maran. Both were booked under the Explosive Substances Act and remanded to judicial custody.The special court on Friday sentenced Rangasamy to a total of 20 years in prison and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
The Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police appreciated Police Inspector and Special Court Sub-Inspector Shanmugam for his efforts in filing the charge sheets, ensuring the timely appearance of witnesses before the court and facilitating the effective conduct of the trials.
