Coimbatore: More than 100 students took part in a rainwater harvesting awareness exhibition and a series of competitions held at the Kalapatti Corporation Primary School in the East Zone on October 8, as part of the Coimbatore Corporation's month-long 'Catch the Rain' awareness initiative.
As the city looks ahead to the Northeast monsoon, the Corporation is stepping up efforts to ensure that every drop of rain is conserved and put to good use. The programme at Kalapatti used the enthusiasm and creativity of school students to spread the message of conserving rainwater among the wider community.
Students participated enthusiastically in speech, drawing and singing competitions, besides slogan-recitation activities centred on the importance of rainwater harvesting. Students who emerged winners in the competitions were presented with special prizes as encouragement.
The awareness campaign also moved beyond the school premises, with a rally organised from the school campus. More than 50 participants carrying awareness placards took part in the rally and spread the message on the need to conserve rainwater.
The Corporation has been creating awareness about the importance of rainwater harvesting across all five zones of the city. Through the month-long 'Catch the Rain' initiative, residents are being encouraged to prepare for the Northeast monsoon by conserving rainwater and ensuring that functional rainwater harvesting structures are installed and maintained at residential premises as well as commercial establishments.
The initiative seeks to turn the approaching monsoon into an opportunity for better water conservation, encouraging citizens to capture rainfall where it falls rather than allowing precious rainwater to run off and go unused.
Assistant Commissioner Dakshinamurthy, Zonal Health Officer Chandran, Corporation Education Department Supervisor Poongodi, Headmistress (in-charge) Bharathi, teachers, students, school management committee members and parents participated in the programme.
