Coimbatore: A special camp for persons with disabilities was held at Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore, with hundreds of people from surrounding areas participating and benefiting from the services provided.
The camp was organised by the Coimbatore District Differently Abled Welfare Office following a special direction from Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, with the aim of making assistance from various government departments easily accessible at a single location.
The camp was conducted at the Venkata Krishnan Indoor Stadium at Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya for the benefit of persons with disabilities residing in and around Periyanaickenpalayam. The event was organised in association with the Gudalur Municipality.
Gudalur Municipal Council Chairman A. Arivarasu inaugurated the camp and inspected the arrangements. Speaking on the occasion, he said the Primary Health Centre that had been functioning in the Gudalur-Kavundampalayam area would soon be renovated at a cost of Rs 10 lakh and made available for the medical needs of persons with disabilities.
Municipal Health Inspector Murugesh welcomed the gathering, while Coimbatore District Differently Abled Welfare Officer Vasantha Ramkumar explained the objective of the camp.
Officials from various departments, including public sector banks, Revenue, Employment, Animal Husbandry, Social Welfare and the Housing Board, participated in the camp and explained the benefits and services available to persons with disabilities.
Doctors from the Coimbatore District Public Health Department examined the beneficiaries and recommended eligible persons for various services, including disability identity cards, Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards, assistive devices, free bus passes, three-wheeler motorised vehicles and tricycles.
Tamil Nadu Rights Project Coordinator Mathaiyan, Municipal Engineer Somasundaram, municipal councillors along with coordinators of TN Rights Project made arrangements for the camp.
