Heavy Rains Lash Ooty; Several Areas Waterlogged
SimpliCity News Team · 1 min ago
Heavy rains lashed Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and surrounding areas in the Nilgiris on Monday afternoon, bringing relief from a prolonged dry spell but putting a dampener on holiday plans.
The downpour, accompanied by thunder and lightning, continued for nearly two hours, leaving several roads waterlogged and forcing popular tourist spots to become inaccessible.
TheRegional Meteorological Centre had issued a warning for October 5 and 6 with possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris and the hill areas of Coimbatore, along with Theni, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts. The showers were also expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph.
In Ooty, rainwater accumulated on several major roads, including Boat House Road and stretches near the shopping area. With water flowing across the roads, vehicles were forced to move slowly through the affected stretches, adding to the inconvenience caused by the heavy rain.
For tourists who had planned to visit the hill station, the sudden downpour proved disappointing as access to tourist attractions was affected. The overcast skies and persistent rain also brought a sharp change from the dry weather that had prevailed in the region.
For residents and farmers, however, the rain brought much-needed relief. After a prolonged period of dry conditions, the showers are expected to benefit tea plantations and vegetable cultivation in the hill region. Locals also welcomed the rainfall, hoping it would help ease water shortages.
Meanwhile, visuals of rainwater gushing through the streets and waterlogged roads in Ooty have been widely shared on social media.
