Coimbatore:

A 21-year-old engineering student died of electrocution during an annual day celebration at a private college hostel in Vattamalaipalayam, Coimbatore, after he reportedly came into contact with an electrical leak near a DJ music setup.

The deceased, Amizhdhan, son of Anbumani (50) from Puthutheru in Kambainallur, Dharmapuri district, was pursuing his final-year B.E. degree and staying at the college hostel.

The annual day celebrations were underway at the hostel, with students participating in the programme and dancing to music played by a DJ. Amizhdhan was reportedly dancing with his friends near the DJ setup when an electrical leakage from equipment at the venue allegedly caused him to suffer an electric shock.

He was thrown to the ground and became unconscious. A fellow student, identified as Saran, who attempted to rescue him, also suffered an electric shock and sustained injuries.

Fellow students and college staff immediately rescued Amizhdhan and rushed him to a hospital. However, doctors who examined him declared that he had already died due to electrocution.

Following the incident, Amizhdhan’s father, Anbumani, lodged a complaint with the Thudiyalur police, alleging that the death occurred due to negligence and inadequate safety arrangements at the venue.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case against four persons associated with the DJ setup — Ranjith (32) of Vellakinaru, Jaisurya (27) of Ambasamudram, Kanishkaran Kumar (23) of Vellakinaru and Manivel — and are conducting an investigation.
