Coimbatore: Across the world, hospitals and healthcare institutions observe October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a strong focus on encouraging women to be more attentive to their breast health and seek screening and medical advice at an early stage.
Every year, healthcare institutions introduce newer initiatives to take this message to more women and make information on breast cancer easier to understand and access.
As part of this effort, Sri Ramakrishna Cancer Care and Research Centre in Coimbatore has launched ‘The Pink Path’, an interactive breast cancer awareness initiative designed to educate women on nine key aspects of the disease.
‘The Pink Path’ was launched by Katta Ravi Teja, IAS, Commissioner, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, in the presence of Dr. Sundar Ramakrishnan, Managing Trustee, SNR Sons Charitable Trust.
The awareness material is available in both English and Tamil, making the information accessible to a wider section of women covering from the basics of breast cancer, signs and symptoms, risk factors, importance of early detection, diagnostic tests, treatment options, preventive measures, understanding individual risk and the experiences of breast cancer survivors.
The initiative comes at a time when breast cancer is increasingly being diagnosed among younger women. According to GLOBOCAN 2024 data, around 1.92 lakh women in India were diagnosed with breast cancer, which accounts for nearly 30% of cancers affecting women in the country.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. P. Guhan, Director and Consultant Medical Oncologist, Sri Ramakrishna Cancer Care and Research Centre, said the increasing incidence of breast cancer among younger women made awareness about breast health particularly important.
He said women should be attentive to changes in their breasts and seek medical attention at the earliest if they notice anything unusual. Early detection and timely treatment, he added, can play an important role in improving treatment outcomes.
Through the nine areas covered under ‘The Pink Path’, women can learn to recognise potential warning signs, understand risk factors, know when medical evaluation may be required and familiarise themselves with available diagnostic and treatment options.
While breast cancer cannot always be prevented, early detection followed by appropriate treatment can help in managing the disease. Women, particularly those above 25 years of age, have been advised to remain attentive to changes in their breast health and undergo appropriate examinations based on medical advice.
Describing the significance of the initiative, Dr. Guhan said ‘The Pink Path’ was not merely about the colour pink but represented a new path towards awareness, early detection and better breast health.
As part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiatives, free mammogram screenings will be offered throughout October to women who register in advance by calling 0422-4500 000 or 0422-4389 797.
The awareness information under ‘The Pink Path’ can also be accessed by scanning the QR code provided as part of the campaign.
