Goondas Act Invoked Against Murder Accused in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Sankareswaran (27), accused in the murder of Vignesh (32), has been detained under the Goondas Act following an order issued by the Coimbatore District Collector.

The murder took place on August 25, 2026, in Thennampalayam, which comes under the Neelambur police limits. According to police, following a drunken brawl, Sankareswaran allegedly murdered Vignesh and dumped his body at the spot.

Sankareswaran subsequently voluntarily appeared at the police station and informed the police about the murder. Based on the information provided by him, police rushed to the location and found Vignesh, 32, dead at the spot.

A murder case was registered against Sankareswaran by the Inspector of Police, Neelambur Police Station, and he was subsequently remanded to judicial custody.

Considering his involvement in activities prejudicial to the maintenance of public order and law and order, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police A. Pavan Kumar Reddy, IPS, recommended his detention under the Goondas Act.

Based on the recommendation, Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, IAS, issued an order detaining Sankareswaran under the Goondas Act. The detention order was subsequently served on him in prison.

The Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police has warned that stringent action under the Goondas Act will be initiated against persons indulging in activities prejudicial to public order or public health.

The public have been requested to share information regarding persons involved in such criminal activities in their locality with the police through 94981-81212 or WhatsApp at 7708-100100. The identities of those providing information will be kept confidential.
