‘Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram’ Scheme: Over 2,600 Newborns in Coimbatore to Receive Gold Rings from Today

Coimbatore: More than 2,600 newborns in Coimbatore district will receive one-gram gold rings under the Tamil Nadu Government’s ‘Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme), which aims to provide a gold ring to every eligible baby born in government health institutions across the State.

The scheme, inaugurated by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is applicable retrospectively to eligible newborns delivered on or after June 22, 2026, which coincides with his birthday.

Under the welfare initiative, one-gram gold rings are presented to newborns born at government hospitals and other government health institutions. The rings will be BIS-hallmarked and feature the Tamil Nadu Government’s logo, an image of the Chief Minister and the name of the scheme.

According to figures released as of September 28, a total of 2,647 newborns born at government health institutions across Coimbatore district are eligible for the scheme.

Coimbatore Medical College Hospital accounts for the highest number of beneficiaries, with 1,713 newborns born on or after June 22, 2026, eligible to receive the gold rings. This is followed by the Government Hospital in Pollachi, with 599 beneficiaries, the Government Hospital in Mettupalayam, with 305, and the Government Hospital in Valparai, with 30.

On September 28, 25 newborns each at the government hospitals in Coimbatore, Pollachi, Mettupalayam and Valparai will receive gold rings under the scheme, taking the total number of beneficiaries receiving the rings on the day to 100.

To facilitate the distribution of gold rings to the eligible newborns, five-member teams will be formed, comprising a Block Medical Officer, a Medical Officer, a Community Health Nurse, a Sector Health Nurse and a Village or Urban Health Nurse. These teams will distribute the gold rings to eligible babies on a daily basis through the government healthcare system.

Newborns delivered at government health institutions after September 28 will be provided with the gold rings on the day of discharge.

To be eligible, the mother must be a resident of Tamil Nadu, registered under the State Government’s Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system and possess a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID.
