The Coimbatore City Police destroyed narcotic substances worth over ₹91 lakh seized in 140 NDPS cases after obtaining court permission. The disposal was carried out under the supervision of the Drug Disposal Committee in accordance with legal procedures and environmental safety norms.
Coimbatore: In a major anti-narcotics initiative, the Coimbatore City Police on Friday destroyed narcotic substances worth over ₹91 lakh that had been seized in 140 cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The disposal was carried out after obtaining the necessary permission and orders from the court.
The destruction exercise was conducted at 10 a.m. on July 3 as part of the second-quarter disposal of seized narcotics for 2026. The contraband was destroyed under the supervision of the Drug Disposal Committee in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act, prescribed legal procedures and environmental safety guidelines.
The narcotic substances destroyed included 270.172 kg of ganja valued at approximately ₹81 lakh, 334.48 grams of methamphetamine worth ₹10,03,440, 1.264 kg of ganja packets valued at ₹37,920, 39 milligrams of hashish and 5,168 psychotropic tablets.
The police said Coimbatore City continues to follow a Zero Tolerance Policy against narcotic offences. As part of its sustained anti-drug campaign, the department has intensified enforcement against the trafficking, sale and consumption of narcotic substances while simultaneously conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges and among the public.
According to the police, 333 Anti-Drug Clubs are currently functioning in educational institutions across the city, and 285 anti-drug awareness programmes have been conducted so far this year. Two Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) units, along with the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), are actively involved in preventing drug-related offences and monitoring identified hotspots.
The Coimbatore City Police have appealed to the public to report information related to narcotic substances through the "Drug Free Tamil Nadu" mobile application or by informing the police directly, assuring that prompt action will be taken on all credible information received.
