Coimbatore District Police observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by organising 337 awareness programmes involving over 23,600 students and destroying 312.45 kg of ganja seized in NDPS cases.
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore District Police observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Thursday by organising awareness programmes across the district and destroying 312.45 kg of ganja seized in various NDPS cases.
The programmes were conducted under the instructions of Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar with the objective of creating a drug-free society by educating students, youth and the public about the harmful effects of narcotic substances.
As part of the observance, a total of 337 anti-drug awareness programmes were organised across the district with the participation of police personnel, educational institutions, government departments, voluntary organisations and members of the public.
Special awareness sessions, seminars, pledge-taking ceremonies and interactive programmes were conducted in 251 schools and colleges, in which 23,624 students participated. The students were sensitised to the physical, mental, social and family-related consequences of drug abuse and encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle free from narcotics.
To promote physical fitness while reinforcing the anti-drug message, Anti-Drug Marathon Runs were organised at 25 locations across the district. Students, youth, police personnel, government officials and members of the public took part in the events, spreading the message, “Say No to Drugs… Say Yes to Life.”
In addition, 23 anti-drug awareness rallies were conducted across Coimbatore district to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse, the legal consequences of narcotics-related offences and their impact on families and society. Citizens were also urged to immediately report information relating to drug trafficking or abuse to the police.
As part of the enforcement drive, 312.45 kg of ganja seized in various NDPS cases registered across all police sub-divisions in the district was destroyed in accordance with court orders and legal procedures. The destruction was carried out under the supervision of the Chairman of the District Drug Disposal Committee and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, in the presence of committee members while adhering to prescribed safety protocols.
The Coimbatore District Police reiterated that stringent legal action would continue against drug traffickers and offenders, while emphasising that public awareness and community participation remain key to preventing drug abuse. Educational institutions, parents, teachers and the public have been urged to actively cooperate with the police in building a drug-free, safe and healthy society.
