The Coimbatore Small Scale Industries Association, CODISSIA has been organizing the 'Coimbatore Book Festival' from 2015, onward. This year’s Book Festival will be held from July 19 - 28 at the CODISSIA grounds. The main objective of the Book Festival is to preserve the cultural identity of Coimbatore by encouraging the habit of book reading .
The Book Festival which is being conducted as a zero profit initiative will have over 100 stalls and more than a lakh books offered at discounted prices. There will be cultural events conducted every evening which promises to be a treat to the eyes and enrich the mind. The literary groups will also organize a face-to-face meet of writers and readers. The intellectual groups will organize speeches insisting on the importance of book reading for school children.
This year, the Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore are joining hands with CODISSIA to jointly organize an essay writing contest for school children in order to make the Book Festival popular among school students. The competition is open for school children in the age group of 8 to 11 years, with the topics being 'My favorite book” or “Gandhi’s ideology.”. The students can submit a 3-6 page essay at the CODISSIA city office before July 5. Selected students will receive prizes and certificates from famous writers. Prizes worth 3 lakhs will be distributed to prize winners. The main objective of conducting the essay contest is to encourage the book reading habit amongst school children and create a platform for them to be inspired, to think and share their thoughts. The organisers felt that this could only be achieved with support from teachers, students and parents in the Coimbatore district.
